What is much less known is that this prototypically “American” composer was in fact persecuted by the US government because of his progressive political views.Ĭopland had clear leftist sensibilities, and spoke out forcefully against the Cold War. The music of US composer Aaron Copland is often considered to be synonymous with “the American sound.” Compositions like “Fanfare for the Common Man,” “Rodeo,” and “Appalachian Spring” earned Copland the title “the Dean of American Composers.”
